REVIEW : Backwood Spirit -- Backwood Spirit (2017)

Backwood Spirit was founded in Örebro, Sweden, in 2014 by guitarist and song-writer Kent Engström. After writing and doing pre-recordings of songs with different musicians, Engström teamed up with long time music companion and drummer Joje Lindskoog (Crossroad Jam, Waving Corn) to put a band together.

In late 2015, the two joined forces with vocalist Göran Edman (Yngwie Malmsteen, John Norum), Niclas Boson on bass and Peter Emilson on keys and finally the band took flesh and bone.

The music here is basically hard blues with a strong southern 'touch' in it that reflecting the musical roots of each member.

All the songs are well-written, well composed and Edman's voice is on top form (as always). I would dare to say that this record is one of this year's, so far, biggest surprises. It's nice to hear Mr. Edman singing some bluesier and more classic rock stuff. I have the feeling that sometimes Blackwood Spirit brings back memories from The Black Crowes but with a more laid-back vibe in it and with Kent's amazing guitar 'touches' that's givin' an extra more attractive approach. It's difficult to pick up, and review, each song separately as favorite 'cause all the songs here are solid and the final result is damn sure that will please every fan of the blues-rock scene in general.

So, if you love the blues with a classic rock vibe in it, then look no further; Backwood Spirit's debut record is an album that you have to check out!

Rating : 8/10
